    The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports.

    Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week.

    In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head.

    During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more deive name for the sport.

    摩根最初給他的發(fā)明起的名字是“mintonette”，當(dāng)?shù)氐囊晃唤淌诤芸鞂⑵涠�義為一種把球擊過球網(wǎng)的游戲，于是，它最初的名字也就發(fā)生了改變。

    從排球出現(xiàn)的第一天起就一直處于各種改變之中，并很快普及開來。1896年，排球傳到了日本以及臨近的一些亞洲國家。1900年，一種經(jīng)過專門設(shè)計(jì)的球開始用于比賽當(dāng)中，在接下來的20年中，排球逐漸發(fā)展成為今天的樣子。比賽按局來計(jì)分以及每局設(shè)有最高比分的規(guī)則1916年在菲律賓率先實(shí)行，1918年起規(guī)定每隊(duì)只能有6名上場隊(duì)員，1920年，規(guī)則又規(guī)定一方擊球不得超過三次，同時(shí)允許后排進(jìn)攻。

    20世紀(jì)20年代在美國創(chuàng)立了國家青年排球錦標(biāo)賽，日本、蘇聯(lián)、美國等國先后成立了國家排球協(xié)會(huì)。二戰(zhàn)期間，美國士兵將排球帶到了駐扎在歐洲的基地，歐洲人很快就對這一新運(yùn)動(dòng)產(chǎn)生了極大的熱情。國際排聯(lián)1947年在巴黎成立，1949年國際奧委會(huì)承認(rèn)排球?yàn)榉菉W運(yùn)會(huì)的比賽項(xiàng)目  同年舉行了首屆世界男排錦標(biāo)賽，比首屆世界女排錦標(biāo)賽的舉辦僅早了3年。在這兩屆比賽中，
