四胞胎：quadruplets

　　A mother has given birth to a rare set of quadruplets in which three of the four boys are identical. There are fewer than 100 documented cases of "identical triplets plus one" in the United States, hospital officials said.

　　一位母親生了四胞胎男孩，罕見的是其中三個胎兒是同卵。醫(yī)院有關(guān)人士表示，在美國只有不到100個“三胞胎加一”的案例。

　　該報道中，quadruplets指“四胞胎”，triplets就是“三胞胎”，而 twins（雙胞胎）可能是最為大家熟悉的一個了，quintuplets則是“五胞胎”。需要注意的是這些詞后面不加 “s”的時候指的是“x胞胎之一”。那么雙胞胎中的“龍鳳胎”怎么說呢？通常的譯法是a pigeon pair（龍鳳雙胞胎）。上述的這些情況一般統(tǒng)稱為“多胞胎”，在英語里就是multiple birth（A multiple birth occurs when more than one fetus is carried to term in a single pregnancy）。
